SolidWorks Sustainability integrates analyses at the beginning of the product development process

Luxury Bike Shop Eliminates Prototypes Using SolidWorks Simulation Software

WALTHAM, Mass., USA, March 22, 2012 – Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp today announced that Travertson Motorcycles is using a variety of tools in the SolidWorks® 2012 3D design solution to create its motorcycles, including molding design, flow simulation and product rendering capabilities.

 

Luxury motorcycles attract a very specific following; the typical buyers for high-end bikes know what they want, are often sophisticated collectors and understand the meaning of performance. To meet these expectations, the team at Travertson found SolidWorks SimulationXpress to be in particular the most valuable part of SolidWorks Professional, enabling its designers to validate designs and virtually determine effects of force and pressure. This allows Travertson to avoid physical testing on an expensive, long-to-fabricate prototype and dramatically cuts the cost of designing each part.

Intercad Webcast Topics – what of SolidWorks would you like to see more of?

With the on-going IntercadDirect programme being driven along by my fellow Business Consultants here at Intercad, one of the most often encountered question that pops up when planning for future events is precisely this – what of SolidWorks would users out there like to know more of?

SolidWorks IntercadDirect Queries – how do you create a decal mask?

With any graphics editing software – essentially working like a stencil in the real world, all that is required is a black-and-white equivalent of your decal to mark out the areas you wish to retain and remove. Such editing capability is not within the scope of SolidWorks.

The mask I used for the webcast was created with Microsoft Paint. However, there are significantly better commercially-available graphics editing packages in the market with far better editing capabilities which users may require with more complicated decals.

SolidWorks IntercadDirect Queries – can decal information be used in eDrawings?

The great news here is, yes, in addition to SolidWorks textures, materials, cosmetic weld textures, cosmetic thread textures and sketch pictures, eDrawings DOES support the display of decal data.

On a related note, RealView appearances and scenes included with parts and assemblies files that are imported or published from SolidWorks 2009 can be displayed provided the eDrawings viewer Performance option is set to “Best appearance, including reflections”.

SolidWorks IntercadDirect Queries – RealView Models & print material?

RealView is what some users term as a screen-only visual capability. While your models may appear to mimic the quality of photo-realistic images, this quality is on-screen only and does not translate onto print material. If photo-realistic, print-quality material is your objective I would strongly recommend looking at PhotoView360 which provides a plethora of capabilities for creating stunning photo-realistic images.

SolidWorks IntercadDirect Queries – Why doesn’t the RealView icon appear?

…or why is it greyed out?

The first thing I would recommend checking is your graphics card – does it support the RealView capability? If your answer to this is “yes”, confirm you are running a tested/certified driver. To verify this, peruse the information provided on the SolidWorks website – http://www.solidworks.com/sw/support/videocardtesting.html

I have encountered some older graphics cards which fall under the professional/CAD cards which do support RealView with limitations so that’s something else to look out for.

Also, as it does increase the overall computational baggage on your hardware, it may be a good idea to turn if off when working with larger assemblies. In addition, RealView is deactivated when Large Assembly Mode or Large Design Review is active.

pester pac automation GmbH Transforms Technical Documentation with 3DVIA Composer

Interactive 3D manuals increase customer appreciation and satisfaction

Haar, near Munich, March 12, 2012 – pester pac automation GmbH has developed a new packaging machine operation concept for its customers that requires clear visualization and structured 3D images to help articulate the value of the product. The longtime user of SolidWorks® 3D CAD turned to 3DVIA Composer™ software to leverage its existing 3D design data in documentation, technical illustration, and for animation and interactive 3D applications. Using this wealth of 3D data, pester pac automation is now creating animated operating manuals, and circuit and pneumatic diagrams to provide better customer satisfaction due to a more detailed explanation of the product.

 

Since 2003, pester pac has relied on its 70 SolidWorks licenses to improve productivity and optimize design. According to Roland Janser, Head of Technical Documentation at pester pac automation GmbH, incorporating 3D into product documentation was the next logical step. “Documentation is very important to us. It helps us support optimum operation of every machine installed at a customer’s site and ensures a long service life. We currently create all document images with 3DVIA Composer and will increase our use of 3D animations in the future. It’s easier to explain how machines work using 3D images because they are more realistic.”

 

Upon delivery, each pester pac automation customer receives a customized documentation package, both in print and on an interactive CD. It includes all relevant machine documents, the operating manual and a spare parts catalog with corresponding exploded view drawings. The latter are created directly from the design data – item numbers are assigned automatically. There is also an interactive search function on the CD that customers can use to quickly find and directly order spare parts.

 

The advantages became apparent in May 2011 with the development of new machines equipped with an innovative SPS control system that enables simple operation and intuitive monitoring and control. A clearly laid out 15” touch-sensitive operation panel offers a convenient user interface. Clear visualization and high-quality, structured 3D images were created using 3DVIA Composer, making it easy for users to see all essential information at a glance on the machine’s operation panel. The panel’s interactive help screens, solution-oriented maintenance and error messages make navigation simple and quick in any situation.

 

3DVIA Composer enables users to quickly and easily convert 3D CAD data into realistic images or animations. These can be integrated into user manuals, installation guides, training documents, or marketing materials and help to precisely demonstrate and explain individual details, uses and functions. Using 3DVIA Composer helps overcome communication barriers, shortens the processing time for technical documentation and reduces translation costs.
